Many within Pentecostal and Charismatic circles emphasize the gift of speaking in tongues as a sign of the baptism of the Holy Ghost. While tongues are an important and beautiful expression of the Spirit’s work, we must not lose sight of the primary purpose of the baptism of the Holy Ghost—power to witness.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus clearly states, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses.” The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not just about speaking in tongues; it’s about being empowered to share the gospel. If we focus solely on the gift of tongues without being transformed into bold witnesses for Christ, we miss the full purpose of the baptism.

Tongues are not the end goal; they are a sign pointing to something greater—a life filled with the Holy Spirit’s power, enabling us to be effective witnesses. If we speak in tongues but do not share our faith, serve the lost, or reflect Christ to the world, we might have received the gift of tongues, but not the fullness of the baptism.

The true evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost is found in a life that boldly proclaims the gospel and walks in the power of the Spirit. Tongues should lead us into deeper intimacy with God and greater boldness to reach others. Without that, we are missing the point. The baptism is for POWER, and that power is meant to make us witnesses to the ends of the earth.
